I’m Philippa Palmer, your English language and literature tutor with 14 years’ professional experience.
Over the last 14 years I have worked with students of all ages and levels in Japan, Italy, Australia and the UK. My experience has been enriched by high level tuition and training at universities, leading language schools, high schools, summer schools and in businesses around the world. My lessons are structured and focused yet light-hearted and enjoyable and I strive to motivate and inspire my students to grow in confidence and ambition day by day.
As well as teaching General English and providing in-house and private Business English tuition, I am an Associate Tutor for the University of Surrey and Pre-Sessional Lecturer for Middlesex University, and a qualified Cambridge Speaking Examiner. I have extensive experience teaching both Cambridge and Trinity Exams and also in providing English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to high school, undergraduate and postgraduate students. With young learners, I tutor both English Language and Literature for GCSE, IGCSE and A Level.
My EAP specialisation includes the development and delivery of preparatory courses not only for university study, but also for the increasingly important IELTS Certification. I support IELTS students in pursuit of bands 5 and above, both privately and at a British Council accredited language school in Woking. Prior to my permanent return to the UK in 2015, I was employed by the Westgate Corporation in Japan to develop lesson plans, course material and teachers’ resources for use by English Language Professors in several of Japan’s leading universities. My IELTS results are exemplary and without exception every student who has completed one of my courses has achieved, if not surpassed, his or her target grade. As Pre-Sessional University Tutor/Lecturer and as of 2016, I am involved in the planning and course-design of lessons intended to prepare students for all aspects of English-medium university study, from presentation and seminar skills, to successful lecture note-taking and academic research/writing.
